English to French: A1 patterns
Practice one useful pattern.
New pattern
French: requesting the bill
A short service request becomes polite with “s’il vous plaît.”
Ready to start.
Ask for the bill politely in French.
How this works
A short noun phrase is enough in this restaurant situation: l’addition + s’il vous plaît. To describe how you want to pay, reuse je voudrais and add the action payer.
Build it piece by piece
- L’addition
- The bill
- s’il vous plaît
- please
- payer
- to pay
- par carte
- by card
Je voudrais can introduce a noun (un café) or an infinitive action (payer).
Worked example
You have the bill; say that you would like to pay by card.
Je voudrais payer par carte, s’il vous plaît.
Compare this with the model above. Notice what stayed the same and what changed. Read both aloud before continuing; this part is for learning, not scoring.
