English to Italian: A1 patterns
Practice one useful pattern.
New pattern
Italian: greeting politely with “Buongiorno…”
A warm greeting can introduce a courteous request.
Ready to start.
Greet a shopkeeper and say you would like a table.
How this works
Buongiorno opens a polite conversation. Vorrei means “I would like.” Put the item after it and finish with per favore. Changing the item gives you a new useful sentence.
Build it piece by piece
- Buongiorno
- Hello / good morning
- vorrei
- I would like
- un tavolo
- a table
- un caffè
- a coffee
- per favore
- please
Italian articles belong with their nouns. Learn un tavolo and un caffè as complete phrases.
Worked example
Now greet café staff and say you would like a coffee.
Buongiorno, vorrei un caffè, per favore.
Compare this with the model above. Notice what stayed the same and what changed. Read both aloud before continuing; this part is for learning, not scoring.
