English to Italian: A1 patterns
Practice one useful pattern.
New pattern
Italian: asking for help politely
A polite question can ask someone directly for assistance.
Ready to start.
Ask someone politely if they can help you.
How this works
Può is the polite singular “can you” here. In aiutarmi, the infinitive aiutare (to help) loses its final e before mi (me) is attached.
Build it piece by piece
- Può
- Can you (polite)
- aiutarmi
- help me
- mostrarmi
- show me
- l’ingresso
- the entrance
Change the action, not the polite opening: Può aiutarmi? → Può mostrarmi…?
Worked example
Ask whether someone can show you the entrance.
Può mostrarmi l’ingresso?
Compare this with the model above. Notice what stayed the same and what changed. Read both aloud before continuing; this part is for learning, not scoring.
